About Phoenix Uprising

Welcome to Phoenix Uprising, home of video game guides, features, and reviews! You can call me Phoenix, but let's talk about you for a moment...

Who you are

You have questions you’re too afraid to ask. You want to learn, adapt, and maybe even teach. You’re aiming for a balance between a pixel-perfect speed run and playing it your own way. You’re tired of unorganized and incomplete guides, clickbait titles, and articles padded with information to please search engines.

Lucky for you, my goal was to create a different kind of gaming publication. I dug through your complaints with modern video game journalism and tried to create something better. Something with accurate and complete guides, reviews that strike a balance between personal narrative and data table, witty and irreverent opinions, and attractive screenshots that took me far too long to capture.

Who I am

Okay, now back to me. My name is Sarah, but I’m better known as Phoenix. I developed and designed Phoenix Uprising, and I currently write and edit all of the content. I’ve been playing MMORPGs since I was 16 and I got my start writing video game guides for my guilds and public forums in Shaiya and Aion. I still have the poorly-formatted PDFs to prove it.

I currently play a variety of genres including MMOs, single-player RPGs, action-adventure, simulation, and the occasional card game. There’s always time for a round of Gwent between all the monster-slaying, after all. I gravitate toward fantasy settings and colorful palettes, but you’ll find occasional coverage of science-fiction and horror environments or games with darker, grittier styles.

When it comes to this site, I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I'm addicted to taking the perfect screenshot. I'll spend hours poring over replays to get you the most accurate information. I won't write a review unless I've sufficiently experienced the game. The content here is created and curated specially for this site. This allows me to add features that I wouldn't be able to include if I submitted my content to other platforms.

Where to start

Values of Phoenix Uprising

The following is an outline of the values of Phoenix Uprising. I uphold these values to the best of my ability and expect anyone who contributes to the site to adhere to them as well.

Accessibility, form, and function

The site should be accessible to people with mobility, hearing, and visual impairments. I strive to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Level AA standards. The site should also be fully responsive on mobile and desktop environments. The user interface and graphic design should be clean, modern, and visually consistent. The content should be well-organized, feature-rich, and easily navigable.

Articles are for people first

My content is written for people first and I will not compromise readability, flow, or user experience to appeal to search engine algorithms. I don’t use clickbait titles, stuff keywords, spam links, buy comments, scrape authoritative sites, post frequent but trivial or low-quality content, or spin, translate, or otherwise plagiarize others’ articles.

No generative AI content

While generative AI is simply a tool, it is currently being used unethically to harm and exploit writers, artists, and other creatives. People who develop these tools often train them using copyrighted data and refuse to disclose their data sources. I support fair pay and attribution for creative works and refuse to engage with generative AI while it is being used to disempower and replace creatives. I do not use AI for branding or other visual imagery, or at any point in the writing process, including outlines, rough drafts, editing, or finished articles.

Advertisement-free viewing

While advertising is the primary way to make a living on the internet, I have yet to see advertising implemented well enough or consistently enough in any written content so as not to interfere with the user experience. At best, ads interrupt articles, and at worst, they can cover text, leave large empty spaces if hidden by an ad blocker, and significantly impair loading times or performance, especially on mobile devices. With that in mind, I don’t run ads on Phoenix Uprising. If you want to support me and my content, check out my Ko-fi page.
